The A5 Kobe Beef of Smiles

As a minor fan of seiyuu unit Wake Up, Girls!, I’ve seen them perform live a few times. As per the customary behavior of Japanese wota in attendance, there are some vigorous calls happening. Calls, in this context, means the words or cheering that the audience chant or yell towards the stage to cheer on their idols. There is one song that they do which the calls are particularly now “a part of the song” in my head, and the calls are fun too. It’s Gokujou Smile.

After watching the various AWM shows in person, as well as the other US-based anison lives that I’ve attended over the years, it’s really obvious that the penlight is what Americans latches on as the one wotaku thing to do. The truth is, that’s just fine–swinging penlight (responsibly) is fun and creates a nice scenery for the performers on stage if everyone does it correctly. But that’s not what makes calls fun to do–it’s not calls! The most fun one has with penlight is, say, balrogging UOs or cycloning with them. Maybe as a prop for furicopy. If you are in a spacious area you can even do wotagei, but that’s more dance than just waving penlights around. Also, I appreciate people using GREEN for WUG, because this is their color. It is the color of Sendai. It’s the color that unites WUGners even if you are a trash DDs or an insensitive tanoshis. (And yeah try not to use Kayatan’s green, and it’s fine to use whatever color as long as you understand all this.) But that’s all besides the point, when it comes to having a good time with Gokujou Smile.

So let’s put aside our penlights for a minute and learn some calls, because this is a sad showing. Sad! What makes Gokujou Smile a fun song for calls is that the calls are mostly standard response calls, and unlike most anisong the calls are a tad more involved. It’s still a far cry from chikagei level of calls, or what people do at a lit indie idol live, but you can really get into these already.

Gokujou Smile should sound like is this:

Just to romanze the calls, via here. The calls are in parens and lit.  Just a few notes:

  • There are some light hand motions that can be done during a few parts, like “housoku housoku” and “nandaka chigau.”
  • The calls with a music note in the paren are sing-along responses.
  • Uryaoi at your own risk, generally people don’t for WUG. If you do, just at the opening and ending.
  • Fuwa x4 are not clap clap Fuwa x2 but some people do it, especially when not at a live.
  • The “Fuu?” call is just a fuu with different intonation. In JP it’s denoted with down and up arrows. (フー↓ウッ↑)
