Omonomono Newsletter, May 9 Update

It’s been a busy but also quiet month. Spring hasn’t quite arrived where I live although it’s clearly Spring. It feels at odds.

Personal Note

I’m actually planning cons, so things are slowly, so slowly, going back to normal. I am going to use the various masks I got to ensure I don’t catch any con crud or what have you, and have an easier time during hay fever season. I will try to test ~3 days after I travel on a weekender. Not sure what else there needs to be done–I guess a 4th booster would be smart to get? But that’s not approved by FDA yet.

Things get complicated if I have to be in contact with immune-compromised people though. So far this isn’t quite the case but it’ll happen later this month if I visit any relatives…

The latest hopium from Japan is they’re going to look at infection stats after Golden Week and plan for tourists, starting with tour groups that can register their itinerary. That’s something, but it’s also bullocks as all heck. Maybe they’re following Taiwan’s model, but this is no way for a G7 country to behave. It’s overly cautious and plainly xenphobic given there’s no quarantine for vaccinated existing travelers (eg., Japanese nationals and re-entry holders).

What happened in the intervening month since the last letter? A lot of anime viewing for one. Now that CR and FUNi’s new shows have merged, I’m basically bouncing between CR and HiDive, which has gotten a lot of their stuff back. I’m doing one more show on Netflix, which is the 3-week-delayed weekly broadcast of Komi-san s2.

From Hi-Dive, most notably are Kong Ming and Executioner (Virgin Road?). That pilot episode was really satisfying. Meanwhile Paripi Kong Ming is the low key best show this season? Both are really worth checking out. Virgin Road gives me…Noir vibes? Except the main heroine pair is a little too over the top?

Of all the shows I’ve gotten a cut, not everyone has gotten a follow up, but it’s probably more because I’m watching baseball now? So it’s me, not your favorite shows. I really want to catch up on Kunoichi, it’s a cute and whacky show, but my brain hurts. Same could be said of the Otome Game anime and the Agupon-insults-the-MC anime. It took a while to shift gears to watch Machikado Mazoku S2 but it’s slowly happening. AoAshi is probably going to be my one Sports anime this season, with Danseur second because its protagonist is the more annoying 15yo. Of all the other light novel trash I’m trying to follow other than what I mentioned already, probably the Skeleton one, the hero-as-employee one, Dawn of the Witch, and Greatest Demon Lord. Birdie Wing is fun. Was almost impressed at that indoor golf course that can be randomly generated lol.

A fair chunk of my current loads are sequels and continuations. New Bookworm continues to give the warm fuzzies, although there’s a tone change. It’s nice to see how the new LOGH adaptation stick harder to the books? Not sure if I will pick up Shield Hero again, it felt as if the course has ran with this concept. I think I paused on Dai no Daibouken but now that it restarted maybe it is time to catch up. I should also pick up AMAIN again since I finished season 1? LOL. Birdie Wing kind of fills that niche for me.

ESTAB Life is still being weird, although its latest “emotional” episode wasn’t a home run, just a base hit maybe… Along the same lines, Healer Girl is impressive but understated. Both are worth the time.

For romcoms this season, there are no lack of solid choices so I think many are happy with this season. I’m trying to watch as many as I can, including A Couple of Cuckoos, but not Rikei Koi… I have mixed feeling about Shikimori-san. The top tier is going to be between the likes of Kagura-san and Spy x Family. In the gaps will be Komi-san, and for those of us looking hard one way (LIP x LIP anime) or the other (A Couple of Cuckoos/Iinazuke).

I’m sure there are others I’m watching but didn’t mention. As usual.

On Pompo, some very side-eyed promo and breakdown on Hirao from Sakugabooru. It’s clear the writer knows a lot about another director lmao.

LOL.
